Lumber

Dimensional lumber refers to lumber that is cut to standardized dimensions, such as 2×4, 2×6, or 4×4. These measurements represent the nominal size of the lumber before it is planed and smoothed. For example, a 2×4 actually measures 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches. The most common types are made from softwoods like pine, spruce, or fir. Dimensional lumber is an ideal choice for small to mid-sized construction or remodeling projects where cost-effectiveness & ease of use are important factors. SPF lumber, which stands for Spruce, Pine, and Fir, is a collective term used to describe lumber that is sourced from these three types of trees. Known for their strength and versatility, spruce, pine, and fir are commonly found in North America, making SPF lumber readily available and cost-effective. SPF lumber presents a host of advantages that make it a top choice for builders and homeowners alike. Its strength, durability, consistency, dimensional stability, workability, and versatility make SPF lumber a reliable building material. 

LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) is a type of engineered wood product that consists of multiple layers of thin wood veneers glued together. This manufacturing process gives LVL lumber exceptional strength, stability and consistency. Unlike traditional solid lumber, LVL is not susceptible to knots, warping, or splitting. It can be used for load-bearing purposes, such as beams, headers and columns, where its high strength-to-weight ratio provides excellent structural support. LVL is dimensionally stable, reducing the risk of shrinkage or expansion, which is crucial when building large structures.

AC plywood is made from multiple layers of thin wood veneers that are glued together with strong adhesives to create a durable & strong piece of plywood. These layers are arranged in a cross-grain pattern to enhance its strength. The manufacturing process involves sanding of the face veneer to achieve a smooth & flawless surface, making it a grade “A”. The other side of the board is not finished, which is considered grade “C”. An advantage of AC plywood is its superior appearance. The smooth face veneer allows for a polished finish, making it the go-to choice for visible surfaces such as cabinetry, furniture & interior paneling.

Underlayment refers to a layer of material that is installed between the subfloor & the finished flooring surface. Its primary function is to provide stability, support and moisture protection. Materials for underlayment can range from plywood to OSB to cement boards or specialized membranes. Underlayment plays a crucial role in the construction process by smoothing out imperfections, such as uneven subfloors and minor irregularities, to provide a level surface for the finished floor. It also acts as a barrier against moisture, preventing it from seeping into the flooring material and causing damage over time.
